Dance Your Way To Happiness

Moving our bodies in ways that simply make us feel good can help tone our muscles, burn fat and increase our happiness.

Movement and exercise is proven to help increase happiness by reducing anxiety, depression, addiction and aging.

Music lights life up. Historically, we’re wired to move our bodies in a musical rhythm.

We all know that exercise is good for us. Dancing can make us smarter. Moving our bodies and shaking our limbs helps to keep our blood flowing and our brains active.

Some people find a particular exercise routine and stick with it because it works for them. Some people like to spice things up by doing something different every week. The different forms of dancing can help to release energy we didn’t even know we had pent up.

Considering dancing as a form of exercise really opens us up for more exploration and benefits.


It’s also proven that listening to music is good for our health. We use it as a soundtrack for our lives. We can use it like therapy when we’re feeling down. We use it as guidance for meditation. And we can use music as motivation when working out.

Imagine what we could create if we invited our friends to a dance session? A dance party not related to alcohol or a celebration. Simply moving our bodies because it feels good.

Moving for Your Mind

Sir Ken Robinson said in his famous TEDTalk How Schools Kill Creativity, that some people need to move to think.

When out and about the town it’s easy to spot the people that enjoy moving their bodies. They’re the ones who sway or bop their heads to buskers on the street.They’re the ones that like to close their eyes and feel the music ignite their blood. They’re the ones jiggling in place at seated concerts. Some often work outdoors so that they’re free to move around and not be confined indoors to a desk. Or if they are confined to a desk, they’re the ones who dancing in their seat.

Dancing is freeing.

Moving our bodies allows us to get out of our heads. Too often we can be bogged down with thoughts, to do lists, worries or dreams. Dancing is one of the best activities to do that will bring us closer to ourselves.

Surrendering to music and letting ourselves feel instead of think can be one of the most liberating feelings in the world.

Dancing makes being in the now easy. There’s no past or future. Just the moves we’re flowing through. We’re free to let our minds think about whatever they like when we dance.

Dancing has a way of releasing emotions. The poem, We Have Come to be Danced by Jewel Mathieson, addresses this idea of movement meaning freedom from emotions. The poem goes through what dancing is and isn’t in our minds. The poem says that dancing is not about how we look or how we think we look.

“the wring the sadness from our skin dance

the blow the chip off our shoulder dance

the slap the apology from our posture dance………

but the meeting of the trinity: the body, breath & beat dance”

Just Dance

Here’s a challenge for you – the next time you want to do some exercise, play some of your favourite uplifting tunes and get moving.

It’s highly recommended to spend 5 minutes blasting songs that make us want to dance. Not only will we release any built up energy but depending on how hard we’re grooving, dancing can count as a light or heavy form of exercise too. This is so easy to do at home but in almost every city there are dance classes with passionate instructors wanting to help awaken our love of movement.

There’s a new type of dance cardio gym class around Brown University (and I’m sure other places too). It’s purely dancing for exercise – a ‘rave meets workout’. People are paying to attend classes with dance music and an instructor sharing some moves.

If you’re looking for some dancing tips, here are some sweet and easy hip hop moves from the amazing Jennifer Johnson helped to train Jessica Alba for her sexy dances in Sin City. These simple moves (demonstrated in GIFs) show how anyone can pull off hip-hop moves which will help you to look suave and keep fit.

If you’re looking for some inspiration, YouTube is the place to go. This dance crew from New Zealand move their bodies in ways never seen before. See ReQuest Dance Crew dance to 7/11. Beyoncé’s catchy tunes do that to some people.

Marie Forleo isn’t just a marketing guru, she was an expert dance teacher for years while she built her business. Her class here is called Dance Yourself Thin.
